Roger Federer joins tennis immortals with 2026 Hall of Fame selection

It wasn’t much of a surprise when the International Tennis Hall of Fame revealed its Class of 2026.

But what was surprising was that tennis legend, Roger Federer, was the only player to secure the requisite support for entry, underlining just how singular his impact on the sport has been.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion’s selection comes in his first year of eligibility, a remarkable feat.

He officially retired in 2022, making him eligible under Hall of Fame rules, and the voters responded emphatically.

The Hall confirmed that while Mary Carillo, former player turned broadcaster, also earned induction, she entered via the contributor category rather than on-court achievements.

A calling-card career and a sentimental induction moment

Federer was informed of his election via a Zoom call that included his tennis idols.

He was at Swiss Tennis headquarters when the announcement came, joined virtually by Hall of Fame members who inspired him early in his career.

For Federer, it was a full-circle moment: surrounded by his peers and the next generation of players in the very place where his journey began.

“I’ve always valued the history of tennis and the example set by those who came before me,” Federer said after learning the news. “To be recognized in this way by the sport and by my peers is deeply humbling.”

Over his storied career, Federer dominated across surfaces and tournaments.

He amassed 103 tour-level singles titles, placing him second only to Jimmy Connors in the Open Era.

He also compiled a jaw-dropping 1,251 match wins and held the world No. 1 ranking for 310 weeks, including a record 237 consecutive weeks at the top.

He was more than just a numbers guy. Federer‘s graceful all-court style, fluid footwork, and gentle demeanor made him a beloved figure not just on the tour, but among fans and peers alike.

The symbolism behind the selection

Federer‘s induction is a symbolic and historic moment. While other greats have been part of the hall’s Class of 2026 conversations, like Juan Martín del Potro and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who were also on the ballot, none received the same level of support in the player vote.

The Hall’s voting process is rigorous: a candidate must receive at least 75 % support from a combined electoral body.

That body includes tennis historians, media, Hall of Famers, and even fans, and Federer‘s election was reinforced by his overwhelming popularity.

He had already won the fan vote, earning extra percentage points to boost his total.

The induction celebration is slated for August 27-29, 2026, in Newport, Rhode Island, where Federer will officially take his place among the sport’s immortals.
