In an exciting match marked by another brilliant performance from Lionel Messi, who scored two goals to secure Inter Miami’s qualification for the MLS playoffs, an unexpected story stole some of the attention as MLS decided to fine Argentine midfielder Rodrigo De Paul for “simulation and exaggeration” in a play against Andres Perea.

Major League Soccer announced through its Disciplinary Committee that Rodrigo De Paul was financially sanctioned, although it did not reveal the exact figure, after considering that he simulated contact during the match against New York City FC, played on September 24.

Why was Rodrigo De Paul sanctioned?

“The MLS Disciplinary Committee has fined Inter Miami CF midfielder Rodrigo De Paul for violating the simulation/exaggeration policy in the 26th minute of the match against New York City FC“, the league said in an official statement.

The images shared by MLS itself showed the Argentine falling to the ground and clutching his face after a slight brush with Perea’s arm, who was actually only trying to shield the ball. The video review showed that De Paul’s reaction was disproportionate, which led to the sanction.

Beyond the financial penalty, Rodrigo De Paul will remain available for Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano in the upcoming matches. He was even in the starting lineup in the match against Toronto, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Toronto and Inter Miami draw

At the end of the first half, Tadeo Allende put Inter Miami ahead on the scoreboard, however, by the 60th minute, Mihailovic scored the equalizer, which put the final figures on the match.

With this score, Inter Miami remains in third place in the Eastern Conference with 56 points, behind Cincinnati (58 points) and leaders Philadelphia (60 points).

Now, Javier Mascherano‘s side will have to close ranks and prepare for their next match, which will take place on Tuesday, September 30, against Chicago Fire.
