It’s a fact that the team has been improving week by week, and right now they might be one of the hottest teams in the NFL. But something curious has started to spark debate among fans: the Texans are 3-0 since C.J. Stroud suffered a severe concussion against the Denver Broncos.
Since then, Stroud has not cleared concussion protocol, and the quarterback in charge has been veteran Davis Mills, who has started in the wins over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tennessee Titans, and the most important one – the upset victory over Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills.
On Thursday Night Football, the Houston Texans’ defense shined. For many, it is the best defense in the NFL, after sacking Josh Allen eight times and intercepting him twice. Meanwhile, Davis Mills once again did his job – maybe not spectacular, but he avoided mistakes and finished with two touchdown passes, one to Jayden Higgins and one to Christian Kirk.
Who will be the Houston Texans’ quarterback for Week 12?
The reality is that C.J. Stroud’s level has dropped. Since last season, he hasn’t been able to return to the form he showed in 2023. Even though things haven’t gone well for Stroud, it seems that head coach DeMeco Ryans has no doubt that Stroud will remain his starting quarterback.
Of course, after three straight wins, Ryans was asked who would start next week against the Indianapolis Colts. While he didn’t explicitly confirm it, his response said everything and showed his support for Stroud: “No, C.J., it’s great to see him out there on the sideline. He’s back at practice. Just to see him again with the guys, smiling and feeling good, that’s the most important thing when players are in concussion protocol.”
Additionally, Davis Mills gave Stroud his respect, acknowledging that once he’s ready, he will be the Texans’ starter: “In my current situation, I don’t think there’s a competition,” Mills said after the game. “C.J. is the starter of this team. I’m just doing everything I can to be at my best every day, help the guys around me, and fulfill my role the best I can when I’m called upon.”
For now, with these three wins, the Houston Texans are in the playoff hunt. And watch out – in an AFC South that no one seemed to want, there’s a real possibility of sending three teams to the postseason: Colts, Jaguars, and Texans. All are playing at a high level, and things could get interesting in the AFC.
