The new Harry Potter TV adaptation produced by HBO has recently caused a stir, not only for its innovative approach but also for an unexpected detail: the appearance of Argentine soccer star Diego Armando Maradona.
In recent hours, a documentary titled “Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic,” which gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the series, revealed a figurine of the Argentine icon stuck to the wall of the iconic cupboard under the stairs in the Dursleys’ house. This did not go unnoticed by Harry Potter and soccer fans, who quickly took to X to share their thoughts.
Was Maradona Harry Potter’s idol?
This curious discovery isn’t part of J.K. Rowling’s books, but it has caught fans’ attention to see Maradona immersed in the world of Harry Potter thanks to a #10 sticker.
In it, he is seen on the field, wearing the Argentina national team jersey and the blue captain’s armband, in a dynamic pose, as if he were about to work some magic-but with the ball.
This image was based on the sticker from the Panini album of the 1990 World Cup in Italy, the era in which the Harry Potter story is set and where Maradona was already a global soccer icon after becoming champion in 1986.
The appearance, though brief, has been enough to spark conversation on social media, where soccer fans and “Potterheads” celebrated the inclusion of such an iconic figure as Maradona in a completely unexpected context.
“The greatest wizards in history,” said one of them.
“Why wouldn’t he be? Diego is great,” wrote another.
“I’d love to see them play Quidditch together,” commented a third fan.
In addition to this curious Maradona-inspired detail, the documentary also showcased other aspects of the massive production, such as costumes and the creation of sets and creatures.
However, these kinds of elements reinforce the idea that the new adaptation will not only aim for fidelity to the books but also incorporate small creative details that enrich the visual experience for new generations.
The first season of Harry Potter will consist of eight episodes and will premiere on HBO Max in December 2026, just in time for Christmas.
