Paul Skenes set to say goodbye to a beloved Pittsburgh Pirates teammate

The atmosphere in Pittsburgh is not the best at the moment. While the Pirates organization seems to be going all-in to be competitive in 2026, this new ambition could mean the end of an era for a franchise icon, who is not happy with the way he has been treated.

This is Andrew McCutchen, who is not comfortable with his relationship with the team’s management and his latest absence from a Pirates event only further fueled rumors of a possible breakdown.

The end of Andrew McCutchen’s cycle with the Pirates

Despite being the team’s most decorated player, the relationship between Andrew McCutchen and management seems to have reached its lowest point. Rumors of a definitive break gained momentum after the veteran’s absence from the annual fan festival, PiratesFest.

McCutchen did not hide his frustration and, through a post on social media, criticized how the organization has handled his free agency. The message was clear: while other baseball legends receive farewells worthy of their careers, he feels that his chapter in Pittsburgh is close to being abruptly closed.

“I don’t know what the future holds for me at the moment, but what I do know is that although I’m 39 years old, I’m at the back end of my career, I still work every day to be better than the year before,” the player explained on social media.

Pirates want to add new teammates for Paul Skenes

This possible farewell coincides with a radical change in management’s strategy to surround its ace, Paul Skenes, with talent. After a 2025 season in which the team was criticized for wasting the best years of the pitcher, Pittsburgh has decided to invest in its offense.

To be more competitive, the Pirates’ payroll is expected to reach $100 million for the 2026 season. In addition, the team has its sights set on Eugenio Suarez, a free agent who hit 49 home runs, through a possible two-year, $42 million contract.

On the other hand, there are also strong rumors about the arrival of Nick Castellanos from the Phillies, in a deal where Philadelphia could get up to $15 million of his salary.

While some may leave, others may arrive, and the main objective is to take care of Skenes, a figure who needs good company to make the most of his great talent.
