Amid an already chaotic College Football Playoff week, a fresh controversy has exploded in college football – this time over one of the nation’s very best players, who had every right to be considered a Heisman Trophy finalist.
Nobody can question that Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodríguez was a dominant force – the true pound-for-pound best player in college football – yet he was shockingly not invited to New York for the Heisman ceremony on December 13. The snub has sparked widespread outrage, including from several NFL veterans.
Patrick Mahomes comes to Jacob Rodríguez’s defense
On November 8, after Rodríguez’s monster game against BYU, former Texas Tech QBPatrick Mahomes didn’t hold back:
“Get him to New York! @HeismanTrophy,” Mahomes posted on X, where he regularly weighs in on his alma mater and other sports.
Instead, the four finalists heading to New York are:
- QB Fernando Mendoza (Indiana)
- QB Diego Pavia (Vanderbilt)
- QB Julian Sayin (Ohio State)
- RB Jeremiyah Love (Notre Dame)
There’s no doubt Rodríguez’s exclusion has become one of the hottest topics in the sport, especially given the incredible numbers that backed his candidacy.
