Brandel Chamblee has never been afraid of bold statements, but his latest critique hit a nerve. On Golf Channel, the longtime analyst called Bryson DeChambeau“an odd duck” and “a captain’s nightmare,” questioning whether theLIV Golf star cares enough about the Ryder Cup to help Team USA.
Those words traveled fast. At Bethpage Black, U.S. captain Keegan Bradley and his team showed public support for DeChambeau, with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis applauding the unity on Instagram. “I’m loving how Team USA is rallying around Bryson DeChambeau and fighting the external narrative. Chemistry and unity are high this year,” she wrote.
Not long after, Paige Spiranac weighed in. The former pro turned media personality pushed back on X (formerly Twitter): “Brandel saying Bryson is a ‘captain’s nightmare’ is such a weird take. He’s the perfect person for this type of team event. He gets the people going! Will be fun to watch his matches this week.”
Different Views of Bryson: Problem or Spark?
Spiranac’s take lines up with the way many fans view DeChambeau-as an entertainer as much as an athlete. He is one of the game’s most recognizable names, known for his power, experiments with equipment, and ability to grab headlines. For her, that energy is exactly what the Ryder Cup thrives on.
Chamblee and others see the risks. Golf Channel’s Rex Hoggard pointed out that DeChambeau’s equipment setup makes him tough to pair in alternate-shot play. “He plays a golf ball that nobody else really plays on Tour,” Hoggard said, noting that it’s why DeChambeau hasn’t appeared in foursomes in past Ryder Cups.
The numbers back that up. DeChambeau has shined in four-ball formats but has yet to earn a point in foursomes. That tactical wrinkle puts pressure on Bradley, who must decide when Bryson’s firepower outweighs the chemistry concerns.
DeChambeau, for his part, comes in hot. He picked up a win at LIV Golf Chicago last fall and nearly stole the 2024 PGA Championship with a final-round charge, according to Golf Digest. ESPN also reported that DeChambeau has embraced his LIV role while keeping one eye on the Ryder Cup picture.
Whether he’s a “captain’s nightmare” or the perfect spark plug depends on how Bradley plays his hand. What’s clear is that Paige Spiranac and much of Team USA aren’t buying Chamblee’s doubts-and Bryson is once again at the center of the sport’s loudest debate.
