The word that unites the names of Oscar de la Hoya and Saul Alvarez is success. Both boxers were at one time inseparable and are remembered for their great triumphs in the ring. However, the relationship broke down never to be repaired. Today they cannot even see each other or mention each other’s name without disrespecting each other. Amid the back and forth in recent years, it was the now promoter and CEO of Golden Boy Promotions who was very hard on the Mexican.
De La Hoya has been characterized by his way of attracting attention using aggression, mockery and disqualification. In this sense, Oscar’s victim criticized Canelo and called him ungrateful, literally saying that he did everything for him until Alvarez simply slapped him and left him in the past. For the Mexican-American it was an act of a cowardly traitor and where forgiveness has no place for this type of attitude.
De La Hoya hopes Canelo will thank him for leading him to success
Canelo Alvarez’s beginnings in the boxing world were with Golden Boy Promotions, where he was given his first fights for the titles he holds today. “Since Canelo was able to fight in the United States at 18 years old, we signed him, promoted him and forged his career. There comes a point when fighters become ungrateful. It’s very sad. You do everything for them and then they slap you in the face”, he told Ring Champs.
However, life takes unexpected turns where human beings make mistakes and the next step is to erase it and make amends. That is why Oscar de la Hoya acknowledged that past of vices when he was leading the Mexican by the hand. “I didn’t do anything. Please tell me what I did so I don’t make the same mistake. I was going through a difficult time. It’s no secret. Rehab, this and that. I actually called Canelo while I was in rehab. I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m here. I can’t go.’ He replied, ‘I understand. Let’s win,’ and that’s it.”
The key to the distance between Canelo and De la Hoya
In the search to find the reasons why he distanced himself from Canelo, he found no fault in his actions and attributes the estrangement to jealousy on the part of Saul, who would have felt overshadowed by the legend. Only they know and the only thing that is clear is that the relationship is broken and without a point of return. Two idols choose to remain apart, despite the fact that boxing fans would like to see them together.
Finally, the Golden Boy said: “There were no problems, that’s why I don’t understand it. It could be jealousy, because I remember that every time I walked into a room where he was, all the attention was on me. Yes, I had love, so it’s like there was some kind of jealousy. It was the only thing I could think of,” he concluded.
