Oscar De La Hoya sums up in 3 words why Devin Haney is not an option for a rematch with Ryan Garcia

Ryan Garcia is at a crossroads when it comes to finding a new opponent, due to the disappointing performance he gave a few days ago against Rolly Romero, who ended up handing him the second defeat of his career, in what was expected to be a stellar return to the ring

One possibility would be a rematch against Devin Haney, the last opponent Garcia beat and stripped of his title, before getting into all those problems that have his career for doping, as well as having a no-decision fight instead of his belt

However, a possible rematch seems increasingly unlikely due to the war of disqualifications that has taken place between Garcia’s manager, Oscar de la Hoya, and Haney’s representative, his father Bill, for more than a year

Bill Haney wrote acidly in a post last month, in one of the most recent exchanges. “The only thing that was filmed was Oscar De La Hoya’s face full of Botox and fillers. Not a wrinkle on the Golden Girl,” he wrote. However, at one of the pre-fight conferences on May 2 in Times Square, where both fighters participated in separate fights, De La Hoya and Haney’s father almost came to blows

As a result of this dysfunctional relationship, a few days ago, Bill Haney shared that the ‘Golden Boy’ blocked him from his social networks. In response, Bill Haney created a list of fighter prospects for his son through X. This list includes names such as Teofimo Lopez, Shakur Stevenson, Gervonta Davis, Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis, Brian Norman Jr, Mario Barrios, Keyshawn Davis, Rolando Romero, Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia.

The list, which was also shared by his son, carries the claim that the Haneys would be willing to fight any of these fighters and appeared on De La Hoya’s Instagram.

World Star Sport also shared it, with the phrase: “#DevinHaney’s list revealed. What do you think?”

One of those who commented on this list was De La Hoya himself, who threw the Haneys’ intention to get a rematch overboard: “Run Forest, run!” in reference to Haney’s most recent fight against Jose Ramirez. Although ‘The Dream’ won the fight by unanimous decision, he actually left many doubts about his ability as a boxer, generating comments such as that he “tried to run” the whole fight, with an extremely defensive style.

Jim Lampley and Tim Bradley were also very hard on Haney, as they felt that Haney has not been able to overcome the loss to Garcia, leaving doubts about Haney’s list to challenge champions in his division or even others. While a rematch against ‘King Ry’ looks a long way off in the near future.

De La Hoya has the option completely closed

Bill Haney told Ariel Helwani about a week ago that he was confident of securing the rematch, thanks to a deal with His Excellency Turki Alalshikh for a rematch in October

However, in his latest statement to Fight Hype, De La Hoya said that the plans for Garcia are going in another direction:

“No, that’s not the direction we want to go. Eh, no interest… In fact, we’re looking to the future,” he said. He also explained that they are focused on getting a rematch against Rolly Romero: “Well, as a fighter – speaking as a fighter, not as a promoter – that’s exactly what I would do, right? So I think it would be the right thing for him to do. You know, get revenge.”
