After analyzing it for several months, Mark Vientos chose to represent Nicaragua in the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The New York Mets third baseman had four nationality options to play in the tournament, but in the end he chose the Central American country because of his mother, Katy Milmor.

Another reason to play with the Nicaraguan team has to do with childhood. In a press conference with local media to announce his incorporation to the national team, Vientos emphasized that he seeks to have an impact on children so that they approach sports and baseball with the aim of setting themselves great goals.

I want kids to see me play and have the goal of playing in the World Baseball Classic. I want to be a positive example for everyone

In the Nicaragua squad, he will be joined by former Royals player Cheslor Cuthbert, Ismael Munguia of the Blue Jays and Freddy Zamora, his old friend from youth tournaments in Florida

Vientos stated that he wants to play first and third base during the WBC, but manager Dusty Baker plans to use him at first base, a position he will cover with the Mets in the 2026 season.

Mark Vientos’ mom, his reason for playing with Nicaragua

His choice was discussed with his whole family. Of all the reasons that were evaluated, the player considered that the most important was the love he feels for his mother, Katy Milmor, with whom he is very grateful, because she has been fundamental to make him the MLB star he is today. For him, his mom is everything.

I’m very proud that I’m going to play in the World Baseball Classic with Nicaragua. Playing for my mom’s country, which is my heart, is something very big

The other options Mark Vientos had

Of Puerto Rican grandparents, Dominican father, Nicaraguan mother and American citizenship, the Mets player had the alternatives of playing for Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and the United States. His deep maternal love led him to make the final decision to be selected by Nicaragua.
