Novak Djokovic withdraws from Adelaide: What it means for the Australian Open

Novak Djokovic has once again made headlines, not for capturing a trophy, but for withdrawing from a tournament many expected him to use as a warm-up ahead of the Australian Open.

With the first Grand Slam of the year scheduled to start on January 18, the Serbian superstar surprised fans by pulling out of the Adelaide International, an ATP 250 event he has won twice and where he has always been a fan favorite.

His sudden withdrawal has raised questions about his fitness and readiness for Melbourne, even though no new injury has been officially reported.

In an Instagram post, Djokovic explained that he was “not quite physically ready” to compete in Adelaide, calling the decision personally disappointing given his fond memories there. The 38-year-old highlighted that returning to Adelaide always felt like playing at home, making the choice even more difficult.

Still, he emphasized that his focus is now on the Australian Open, where he has a remarkable history. Djokovic has won the Melbourne Grand Slam ten times and holds 24 major titles overall, making him one of the most successful players in tennis history.

Skipping Adelaide, he indicated, was a strategic move to ensure his body is at peak condition for the season’s first major.

Djokovic has not played a competitive match since early November, when he won the title in Athens. He also opted out of the ATP Finals for the second consecutive year, citing lingering shoulder issues. While these are not new injuries, the decision to bypass Adelaide suggests he is still managing his physical condition carefully.

Fellow Australian Open contender Nick Kyrgios has urged fans to appreciate Djokovic‘s longevity, noting that even at 38, he continues to compete at the highest level.

Kyrgios said that having a veteran like Djokovic in the draw is invaluable for the sport and serves as inspiration for younger players such as Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, who have dominated the past eight Grand Slam tournaments.

What this means for Djokovic

With Adelaide off the calendar, all attention now turns to Melbourne Park. Djokovic will aim for an 11th Australian Open title and a record-extending 25th Grand Slam overall. His past success in Melbourne speaks for itself, making him a perennial favorite despite recent competition from emerging stars.

By skipping a tune-up event, Djokovic may gain extra time to refine his preparation, but questions remain about his match readiness when the first ball is served. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can quickly find rhythm and form against a younger, hungry field.

Djokovic‘s Adelaide withdrawal is less about injury and more about strategic preparation.

As the Australian Open approaches, the tennis world will be watching to see if he can once again add a historic chapter to his legendary career.
