New York Mets ready for big market hit: Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger appear as main targets

The New York Mets offseason has been one of the most hectic in recent years. After falling short of the playoffs, the franchise made strong decisions that included the departure of fan favorites such as Brandon Nimmo, Edwin Diaz, Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil. This move, although controversial, left the team with great salary flexibility to rebuild its roster for the upcoming season.

Salary space for a star signing

According to renowned insider Jon Heyman (New York Post), the Mets are in an ideal position to make a high-impact signing. President of baseball operations David Stearns is considering going after one of the two most coveted free agents on the market: Kyle Tucker or Cody Bellinger

Heyman notes that the organization is currently leaning toward Bellinger because Tucker would have a higher salary claim, although both profiles fit the team’s urgent need to strengthen its outfield.

Offensive priority over pitchers

Reports also indicate that the Mets are not interested in closing long-term contracts with starting pitchers in this window. The absolute priority is to add offensive power and a consolidated bat that makes an immediate difference

In that scenario, Bellinger’s figure takes on weight, while Tucker is still seen as an elite target, albeit with direct competition.

Strong competition for Kyle Tucker

According to Mark Feinsand (MLB.com), the Toronto Blue Jays remain the favorites to sign Kyle Tucker. However, the Mets remain a serious contender, while the Los Angeles Dodgers appear as the “wild card” in the bidding. The Yankees, on the other hand, would be out of the race for Tucker, although they could insist on Bellinger.

Performance and risks at play

Kyle Tucker has been one of the most consistent offensive stars since 2021, accumulating 25.5 bWAR in five seasons, as well as a batting line of .277/.365/.514, 134 home runs and an OPS+ of 145.

However, injuries have been a major factor, keeping him out of more than 100 games over the past two seasons.

The Mets face a key decision

With pressure from the fans, salary cap space and the urgent need to compete again at the highest level, the Mets are preparing to make a splash in the market. The outcome will set the immediate course for the franchise… and could completely change the landscape of next season’s MLB.
