Nationals walk off the Mets and snap their streak in thrilling finish

The New York Mets visited the Washington Nationals as the best team in Major League Baseball and with a seven-game winning streak, and although they sold out for the loss, they fell in a crazy finish to be left on the field.

James Wood’s simple two-out hit in the ninth inning drove CJ Abrams from first base and the Nationals rallied to beat the Mets 5-4 on Friday night.

Dylan Crews had three hits for Washington, which won for the fifth time in seven games and turned its third triple play since the franchise moved to Washington in 2005 in the fourth inning.

The thrilling finale at Nationals Park

Baseball is the ‘King of Sports’ among other things because of its ability to give emotions and after in the seventh inning the Mets increased their lead to 3-0 with a grounder by CJ Abrams that drove in Jose Tena, the Mets reached the eighth inning with the rope around their neck.

But with two outs, Juan Soto and Pete Alonso managed to load the bases along with Tyrone Taylor, and cleanup hitter Brandon Nimmo hit a single to drive in a run that avoided the shutout

Then Matt Vientos came in to silence the stadium with a bases-clearing triple, allowing Soto, Alonso and Nimmo to score the comeback runs that seemed to extend the Mets’ winning streak to eight games.

The Nationals entered the ninth down 4-3, Crews tripled off Ryne Stanek (0-1) and scored on Jose Tena’s single against an infield that had gone away

Madness ensued in the next inning, when after a couple of fielder’s choice groundouts, Wood singled to right-center off AJ Minter, just under the glove of second baseman Jeff McNeil. Abrams didn’t slow down as the ball slid into center field and beat the throw to score the winning run.
