MLS gets tough: bans two players for life over betting

MLS has made a clear statement of authority by confirming the lifetime suspension of two soccer players who were involved in soccer betting, where they used themselves to make a profit. In a statement, the US soccer league confirmed the sanction and called for sanity. After a thorough investigation, the league determined that the players, Derrick Jones and Yaw Yeboah, seriously violated integrity policies by placing massive bets on soccer matches.

The investigation, conducted by law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP, revealed that the players bet during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. The most critical point of the report notes that both specifically bet on Jones to receive a yellow card in a match against the New York Red Bulls in October 2024, which he did.

According to the league’s official statement, there is suspicion that those involved “probably shared confidential information with other bettors about their intention to force yellow cards.”

The situation with gambling is quite serious and there have been other leagues that have also imposed heavy sanctions, so MLS complied with its integrity and hope that this phenomenon does not spread.

MLS’s stance

MLS commissioner Don Garber was blunt about the organization’s zero tolerance for such acts:

“Major League Soccer remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity. The league will continue to enforce its policies, reinforce education efforts and advocate for the elimination of yellow card betting in all states,” the executive explained.

Although the investigation clarified that there is no evidence that these activities altered the final score of the matches, the lifetime ban seeks to eradicate any shadow of doubt about the transparency of the tournament.
