The Copa Libertadores is one of the most prestigious tournaments in the world of soccer, where the best clubs and Conmebol participate to be crowned the best in the entire region. This is precisely where Lionel Messi and Inter Miami are looking to participate in what is considered by many to be the best tournament in the Americas.

In recent days, the possibility of the MLS and Liga MX champions being able to play in this prestigious tournament has increased.

MLS and Inter Miami want Messi to play in the Copa Libertadores

Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas has not hidden his excitement about the possibility of the team playing in the Copa Libertadores in the near future, expressing that they are in negotiations to achieve this and thus be able to see Lionel Messi play in Conmebol’s most important tournament.

If quotas could be added for MLS and MX, the competition would be bigger and more attractive

In addition, the Inter Miami owner explained that both MLS and Liga MX deserve these places

“I would like to play in the Copa Libertadores, I say it publicly, I think that the champions of MLS and Liga MX maybe deserve a place.”

Jorge Mas

Before the arrival of the Argentine star to the MLS club, Liga MX sought by all means to be able to play in the Copa Libertadores in order to maintain a good competitive level. However, they encountered many restrictions from their confederation, Concacaf, who saw it as unfeasible (at least at that time) the possibility of Mexican league teams playing in the Conmebol tournament.

The president of Conmebol analyzes that Mexico and the United States play the Copa Libertadores

Alejandro Dominguez, current president of Conmebol, told Globo Esporte that the possibility of teams from MLS and Liga MX playing in the Copa Libertadores is being analyzed. However, the president emphasized that for this to become a reality, it must be authorized by Concacaf.

“It’s a topic that should be discussed within Concacaf. It has been done in the past, but we are very respectful of the other confederations. But yes, it is an honor that teams from other confederations have the Libertadores as a reference for international and world competition.”

Alejandro Domínguez

In the next edition of the Libertadores, there are no plans to incorporate any team from MLS or Liga MX, but if Lionel Messi continues at Inter Miami and Conmebol and Concacaf reach an agreement, it is possible that in a couple of years teams from the United States and Mexico will compete in the tournament.
