March of destiny: Barcelona risks ending the season empty-handed

FC Barcelona has just suffered a tough blow after failing to fulfill the promise of mounting a comeback against Atlético Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal. This elimination leaves the Catalan club without another domestic trophy and entering a decisive stretch of the season where they will practically play for their lives in the UEFA Champions League.

They’re playing for their lives in the Champions League

It’s time for the Blaugrana to turn the page after exiting the Copa del Rey, especially considering they remain leaders of LaLiga, holding a four-point advantage over Real Madrid in the LaLiga title race-a margin that could prove decisive if they maintain consistency in the Spanish league.

However, one of the biggest concerns now is the upcoming Champions League Round of 16 tie. Hansi Flick’s side will face Newcastle United in the knockout stage-an instance they qualified for directly-and where elimination would represent a major setback in their European ambitions.

Barcelona first takes on Athletic Club in LaLiga on March 7, followed by the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against the Premier League side on March 10.

Next comes Sevilla on March 15, before wrapping up the tie against the Magpies on March 18 in what could define their 2026 Champions League campaign.

This means that in a single month, Barça could lose the league lead-just as happened earlier this season-while also putting everything on the line in Europe, where one bad result could derail their Champions League title hopes.

Should there be maximum concern for Hansi Flick and his coaching staff as the season reaches its most critical phase?
