Manchester City news: Rodri refuses to deny speculation over Real Madrid move

Manchester City midfielder Rodri has officially addressed the intensifying speculation linking him with a high-profile move to Real Madrid.

With his current contract at the Etihad set to expire in the summer of 2027, the Spanish international’s future has become a central talking point as City prepares for a pivotal Champions League showdown.

When pressed on the rumors regarding a return to the Spanish capital, the former Ballon d’Or winner delivered a blunt response that notably stopped short of a denial.

“No, no. I’m not going to answer that,” Rodri said, as quoted by GOAL.

It’s a time to think about what we have now, with my team, about my season, which is quite a lot, and then we’ll see.

Rodri

A cornerstone of the Guardiola Era

Since his £62.6 million move from Atletico Madrid in 2019, Rodri has established himself as the engine of Pep Guardiola’s side. Over 291 appearances, the 29-year-old has netted 28 goals and provided 32 assists, playing a foundational role in a trophy-laden era that includes 11 major honors and four Premier League titles.

Real Madrid’s interest is reportedly long-standing, with the Spanish giants viewing the 2024 Ballon d’Or recipient as a transformative addition to an already elite midfield.

Rodri’s refusal to shut the door on a potential exit comes at a sensitive time for the Cityzens, who are currently grappling with significant challenges on the European stage.

Climbing a mountain against Arbeloa’s Madrid

The transfer talk coincides with a dire situation in the Champions League Round of 16. Manchester City enters the second leg at the Etihad trailing 3-0 after a clinical performance by Alvaro Arbeloa’s Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu.

A first-leg hat-trick from Federico Valverde has left the Premier League champions facing their second consecutive elimination at the hands of Los Blancos, following last season’s 6-3 aggregate defeat.

Pep Guardiola admitted the difficulty of the task ahead, sounding a cautious note about his team’s chances of a historic comeback. “Right now, [our chances are] not much,” Guardiola remarked.

Of course, we are going to try. Now everything is more difficult with our mindset, but we will be there, we will be with our people… and we will try.

As the clock ticks toward kickoff, Rodri’s performance on the pitch will be under as much scrutiny as his words off it, with many wondering if this could be one of his final European nights in a City shirt.
