Lions trade David Montgomery to Texans, end ‘Sonic and Knuckles’ duo

The Detroit Lions are reportedly moving on from veteran running back David Montgomery in a trade that signals a new direction for their backfield.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Lions are sending Montgomery to the Houston Texans. In exchange, Detroit will receive a fourth-round draft pick, offensive lineman Juice Scruggs, and a seventh-round pick.

The deal marks the end of the “Sonic and Knuckles” tandem featuring Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs – a pairing that powered Detroit’s offense over the past two seasons. But after a noticeable shift in workload in 2025, the writing appeared to be on the wall.

Why Detroit moved on from Montgomery

Montgomery’s usage declined last season as Gibbs emerged as the primary back in Detroit’s offense. While Montgomery remained productive – scoring eight rushing touchdowns and averaging 4.5 yards per carry – the split that once defined the Lions’ rushing attack tilted heavily in favor of the younger, more explosive Gibbs.

There were also signs of tension following the season. Just last week, Lions general manager Brad Holmes acknowledged that conversations about Montgomery’s future were ongoing.

Obviously, look, we love David. He’s a great player. We would love to have him. Kind of want to put last year in the rearview and just move forward. But a player has to want to be at a certain place as well, so those conversations are still fluid and we’re just kind of seeing how it goes.

That statement now appears to have foreshadowed this move.

Montgomery, who turns 28 this year, is at an age when many running backs begin to experience decline. By trading him now, the Lions likely felt they could maximize his value before potential wear-and-tear impacts his production. The deal also frees up just over $3.5 million in cap space – modest relief, but helpful as Detroit continues managing its roster finances.

What this means for the Lions and Texans

For Detroit, the trade is about fully committing to Gibbs as the lead back. The 2025 season already suggested that shift was underway. Now, the Lions must address depth at the No. 2 running back position, either through the draft or free agency.

Acquiring Juice Scruggs adds depth to the offensive line, while the additional draft capital provides flexibility in April.

For Houston, Montgomery offers a proven, physical runner who can complement their offense immediately. Despite reduced touches last year, he showed he still has plenty left in the tank. His downhill style and nose for the end zone could make him a key contributor in the Texans’ offense.

Ultimately, this trade closes a successful chapter in Detroit while opening new opportunities for both franchises. The “Sonic and Knuckles” era may be over, but both teams are betting the move strengthens their long-term outlook.
