Lakers’ plans thwarted as New Orleans keeps Herb Jones off the market

The Los Angeles Lakers have been active in exploring ways to strengthen their roster as they look to cement themselves as championship contenders this season.

Despite boasting a potent offense led by LeBron James and Luka Doncic, the Lakers’ defensive efficiency has often lagged behind their scoring output. To address this imbalance, the front office has targeted elite defenders to complement their stars, and New Orleans Pelicans wing Herb Jones quickly emerged as a prime candidate.

Widely regarded as one of the NBA’s top perimeter defenders, Jones is known for his versatility and ability to guard multiple positions effectively.

Jones‘ defensive skill set aligns perfectly with what the Lakers need. Analysts and insiders suggested that acquiring a player like him could significantly improve Los Angeles’ defensive consistency, a key factor in playoff success, especially in the competitive Western Conference.

Beyond defense, Jones‘ ability to contribute in transition and make smart plays off the ball would provide a valuable two-way presence, allowing the Lakers’ stars to focus more on scoring. Early trade buzz indicated that the Lakers were ready to offer expiring contracts and draft assets in pursuit of Jones.

Pelicans stand firm on keeping defensive star

However, the Pelicans have made it clear that they are not willing to part with their defensive cornerstone. After signing a three-year, $68 million extension in July 2025, Jones is under contract through 2030 with a player option, giving New Orleans both control over his future and significant leverage in trade discussions.

League sources indicate that the Pelicans dismissed the Lakers’ offers, emphasizing that Jones is a central piece in their roster construction and long-term plans. This firm stance means that, despite interest from multiple teams including Los Angeles and Golden State, Jones is expected to remain in New Orleans for the foreseeable future.

The rejection represents a significant setback for the Lakers’ plans. While they had hoped to make a midseason acquisition to bolster their defense, the Pelicans’ unwillingness to trade Jones underscores the challenges of obtaining elite defensive talent.

Even substantial trade packages are unlikely to sway New Orleans, as the team values Jones not only for his immediate impact but also as a foundational player for years to come. For Lakers fans, this development highlights that trade rumors often face practical obstacles, and that the pursuit of high-caliber players doesn’t always result in a blockbuster move.

While Los Angeles may need to adjust its strategy, the search for defensive reinforcements will likely remain a top priority as the season progresses, with the front office seeking creative solutions to close the gap on championship contenders.
