Lakers’ JJ Redick adds pressure on LeBron James ahead of the playoffs: Everybody wants to play us

It’s possible that JJ Redick sent a double-edged message, intentionally or not. His words were received with more concern than confidence, as they seemed to question what LeBron James can still deliver at a critical moment for the Los Angeles Lakers, who are navigating a difficult stretch without two key contributors late in the season.

The absence of Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves has clearly disrupted the team’s balance. Instead of sounding empowering, Redick’s remarks took a different turn, opening the door to interpretation about the team’s current position and how opponents may view them heading into the playoffs.

A message that shifts perception at the wrong time

As the Lakers prepare for a potential playoff series against the Houston Rockets, Redick acknowledged the reality of the situation. With injuries affecting key pieces and uncertainty around their return, he suggested that his team has become an attractive matchup for others. Around the league, there is also a sense that some franchises may be managing rotations and lineups with future playoff paths in mind, aiming for more favorable matchups.

Redick made it clear that his focus remains internal, emphasizing that the Lakers cannot afford to get caught up in external scenarios. Still, the underlying tone of his comments stood out, especially given the timing and the stakes.

LeBron’s role becomes even more central

Between the lines, the message carried weight. With two important players sidelined, the responsibility naturally shifts toward LeBron. While his presence alone changes the dynamic on the court, the expectation for consistency and durability becomes even greater. In that context, Redick’s comments may have unintentionally placed added pressure on the veteran to lead and sustain the team through a demanding postseason stretch.

LeBron setting the tone and the rest of the roster responding when it matters most

There is little doubt about LeBron’s leadership and impact, but at this stage, the question is how much he can carry and for how long. That uncertainty is now part of the conversation surrounding the Lakers as they head into the playoffs.

Focus remains on belief and execution

Despite the circumstances, Redick continues to stress belief within the group. His message to the team has centered on finding the right formula to compete night after night, regardless of who is available. The approach is simple: stay focused, build confidence internally, and prepare for whatever matchup comes next.

The Lakers enter the postseason with questions, but also with a clear understanding of what’s required. If they are to prove Redick’s comments wrong, it will start with LeBron setting the tone and the rest of the roster responding when it matters most.
