Kevin Stefanski makes a nice gesture to Bernie Kosar to help him recover from his liver transplant

After practice concluded and preparations for the matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders began, Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski headed to University Hospitals to see former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar, who is recovering from a liver transplant.

Kosar underwent the transplant Monday morning, a critical turning point after days of internal bleeding had placed him in serious danger.

From his hospital bed, he shared a photo on X showing Stefanski at his side and offered a message of appreciation to those who have rallied around him.

“Coach Kevin visited me today, and even from this hospital bed, I felt the whole team/ organization Dawg Pound cheering me on,” he wrote.

The former quarterback revealed last year that he had been battling cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease, and recent days have brought surgeries and moments of uncertainty for him and those close to him.

The successful transplant offers a path forward in what has been an exhausting medical fight. Stefanski, who has maintained communication throughout the ordeal, spoke earlier in the week about checking in on Kosar and the bond they share.

“I just want to let everybody know we’re thinking about Bernie as he’s going through his medical situation here. I was able to text with him last night and he knows that we’re with him and he’s with us. So just sending all the good vibes, good thoughts I can to Bernie right now,” Stefanski said as the team began preparations for Week 12.

A coach’s personal connection to a Cleveland icon

Stefanski‘s visit was not simply a gesture on behalf of the organization. Since arriving in Cleveland, he has built a personal connection with Kosar and his family. That sentiment came through clearly as he elaborated on why the former quarterback means so much to him.

“Since I’ve been here, he has just been such a supportive person of me, so kind to my family. I think he sees my family every game day and just is so good to them. So he’s a special, special person. He’s a special Cleveland Brown, and we are all rooting for him and we are all right there with him right now,” Stefanski added.

Kosar himself has been open about the severity of what he was facing before doctors moved forward with the transplant. He described it as a life-or-death moment. And in a fitting detail for a fan base known for fiercely supporting its own, Kosar recently indicated that a Browns fan may have played a role in ensuring he received the organ he needed.

It will take time for Kosar to regain his strength, but the show of support from Stefanski, the organization, and the broader Cleveland community underscores how deeply he remains tied to the franchise.

As the Browns push through a demanding season, Kosar‘s recovery has become a reminder of the human relationships that carry far beyond the field.
