Kevin Stefanski faces harsh criticism after failing to reward Shedeur Sanders, who made history with the Browns

Kevin Stefanski is facing widespread criticism after reportedly failing to award Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders the game ball following his historic NFL debut.

Sanders, the rookie quarterback, became the first Browns starter since 1999 to win his first NFL start.

It was a remarkable achievement that drew praise from analysts, former players, and fans alike.

But controversy erupted when social media and various sports icons noted that Stefanski chose to give the game ball to Myles Garrett after he recorded three sacks, bypassing Sanders entirely.

Despite Garrett’s obvious impact, critics argued his decision diminishes the significance of Sanders‘ accomplishment and sends the wrong message about valuing historic performances.

NFL icons hit out at Stefanski

Two prominent voices in sports commentary, Shannon Sharpe and Chad Ochocinco, were quick to voice their displeasure.

On a recent broadcast on the Night Cap Show, Sharpe expressed his astonishment at the decision.

“Hold on, a guy is making his first start. A guy that you didn’t even want in your organization. And that’s all he gets. Great job…He don’t get no game ball?” he said.

Adding to his remarks, Ochocinco emphasized that the rookie deserved recognition.

“Nah, he don’t get no game ball, unc. That wasn’t his pick. That’s not what they want. They don’t want him to succeed. You know that… didn’t Shedeur make history tonight?” he said, highlighting the frustration many feel regarding the perceived slight.

Sanders‘ achievement was notable not only because of the win itself but also for its historical context. Cleveland Browns rookies had endured a 17-game losing streak in their first starts since 1999, a statistic that underscores the rarity of the accomplishment.

The victory, a 24-10 triumph over the Las Vegas Raiders, marked a turning point for the Browns‘ season and injected hope into a franchise that has struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position.

Despite the rookie’s standout performance, Stefanski‘s decision to award Garrett instead of Sanders has sparked debate about leadership, recognition, and the handling of emerging talent.

Many fans and analysts argue that acknowledging landmark achievements is critical in fostering morale, particularly when the player in question overcame long odds to succeed after being benched early in the season.

Stefanski’s man-management comes under scrutiny

The situation has also renewed discussion about Stefanski‘s management style and approach to player recognition.

While Garrett‘s dominant defensive showing deserved praise, detractors suggest that failing to simultaneously honor Sanders diminishes the rookie’s accomplishment and raises questions about the team culture under Stefanski.

With the Cleveland Browns continuing to fight for relevance in the NFL Playoffs, the spotlight on Sanders‘ historic debut and Stefanski‘s controversial handling of the recognition may linger.

It’s clear though that fans, former players, and commentators alike are unified in their belief that Shedeur Sanders deserved his due, and the conversation surrounding this controversial moment is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
