Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. beat up Sinaloa Cartel members like punching bags

Mexican boxer Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a former world middleweight champion who is in custody in the United States, allegedly punished members of the Sinaloa Cartel by beating them up, according to an investigation by the Mexican Attorney General’s Office (FGR) revealed on Friday by the newspaper Reforma.

According to information obtained by the Mexican newspaper, Chavez Jr. is described as a “henchman” of Nestor Ernesto Perez Salas, ‘El Nini’, one of the leaders of the cartel. It seems that ‘El Nini’ ordered the son of Julio Cesar Chavez, a legend of Mexican boxing, to beat up his subordinates who made mistakes that could put them in evidence.

The prosecutor’s office’s accusation is based on two telephone calls from alleged drug traffickers, as well as immigration records shared by the United States and after his arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol.

On November 21, 2019, the deputy attache of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Service (ICE) and the U.S. Embassy’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) filed a complaint with the Mexican Attorney General’s Office for arms trafficking. As a result of this complaint, the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime wiretapped several suspects from December 11, 2021 to June 11, 2022.

During this period, they explained how one of the cartel members took a girlfriend to a safe house where there were kidnapped people and a warehouse with weapons. There he saw how ‘El Nini’ ordered his subordinate to be tied up and hung like a punching bag for Chavez Jr. to hit him.

Chavez Jr., 39, was arrested last Thursday in the United States and will be deported to Mexico. The U.S. government accuses him of having links with the Sinaloa Cartel, in addition to not having documents to be legally in the country.

Chavez Jr. entered the United States legally in August 2023 with a visa until February 2024. Two months after the end of his visa, he applied for permanent residency in the country on the grounds that he was married to a U.S. citizen. His partner is also linked to the Sinaloa Cartel because she had a previous romantic relationship with a son, now deceased, of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

Although in December 2024 he was declared “a serious threat to public safety” in the country, U.S. authorities ultimately determined that his case was not a priority and he was not arrested at that time. However, after “multiple fraudulent statements” in his application to become a permanent resident, he was prosecuted and will be deported to Mexico. The arrest came after the Mexican boxer lost in a fight in Anaheim with YouTuber Jake Paul.
