Julio Cesar Chavez is accused of ‘introducing’ the Chapitos to his son, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr

Amid the recent accusations and arrest of Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by United States immigration authorities, his father, Julio Cesar Chavez, has been the subject of accusations for allegedly having introduced him to members of the group Los Chapitos, linked to the Sinaloa Cartel

Both Chavez have faced constant media attention, but the narrative took a more serious turn after the son’s arrest for alleged links to organized crime. The controversy grew when reports surfaced that it was Julio Cesar Chavez himself who introduced his son to the environment of the sons of “Chapo” Guzman, fueling controversy over the former boxer’s role in his son’s personal and public life.

Chavez Jr.’s arrest: from immigration problems to an arrest warrant

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. was arrested on July 2, 2025 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in California. Authorities accuse him of lying on his application for permanent residency and of being involved in a criminal network with charges including arms trafficking, explosives and organized crime.

After his arrest, an arrest warrant issued in 2023 by the Attorney General’s Office in Mexico was made public. This order was the result of an investigation opened in 2019. The extradition process is already underway, and the Mexican government has expressed its interest in having Chavez Jr. face justice in Mexico.

The son of the legendary champion has gone through rehabilitation clinics, legal battles and multiple scandals on social networks. But this episode marks his most critical moment, as he is legally linked to organized crime structures.

What is known about Chavez Jr.’s alleged link with Los Chapitos?

The most delicate accusation appeared in a radio interview, where a witness who lived with the Chavez family described a scene that occurred at the champion’s house, close to Christmas, several years ago. In it, Julio Cesar Chavez showed signs of alteration due to substance abuse, while talking about political issues and hurling insults, even towards his own son Julio, whom he verbally humiliated in front of friends and family.

Julio Cesar Chavez has acknowledged knowing members of the Sinaloa group, but says it is common social relationships in Culiacan, with no criminal implications. He has publicly reiterated that his son is innocent and that many of the people he has been associated with are part of the context in which he grew up. However, some journalists point out that even Chavez Jr.’s partner, Frida Munoz, widow of Edgar Guzman, may have facilitated this relationship.

Claudia Sheinbaun against Chavez Jr.

President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that the investigation against Chavez Jr. has been open for years. She said that the case is being handled in accordance with the law and that efforts will be made to ensure that he faces Mexican justice once his legal process in the United States is concluded.

Analysts have criticized the previous passivity of the Mexican authorities, who kept the warrant inactive until he was arrested outside the country. Public opinion is divided between those who demand justice and those who consider it an excessive persecution because he is the son of a public figure.
