Mexican Jose Urquidy will return to Major League Baseball in the 2026 season after signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Mazatlan-born pitcher is looking to relaunch his career and become a protagonist in MLB once again.

After Detroit declined the option to keep him in 2026, Urquidy returned to Mexico in the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) with the Venados de Mazatlan to stay in good shape in search of a MLB team, which came very soon for his luck.

Jose Urquidy returns to Mexico for a while before returning to MLB

The Mexican returned after seven years to the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) with his hometown team, the Venados de Mazatlan. In that game, held in November, the Mexican started at the Teodoro Mariscal Stadium, suffering a 2-0 defeat against the Aguilas de Mexicali, where he pitched only three innings with a pair of runs accepted.

In his return to Mexican territory, the 2022 World Series champion with the Houston Astros threw a total of 65 pitches in his first game, 43 of which were strikes. In addition, he helped the Venados record their best attendance at the venue since the season opener.

The 30-year-old Mexican with six years of major league experience and three World Series appearances returned as a free agent after the Detroit Tigers declined to exercise his contract for 2026, which opened the door for any MLB team to acquire his services, which ended up happening these days after a month of returning to Mazatlan.

Arizona Diamondbacks: A new beginning for Jose Urquidy

The Mexican from Sinaloa signed a deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks for the 2026 season in an attempt to return to Major League Baseball, trusting in the great level shown in winter baseball.

Although the economic terms of the contract are not yet known, nor whether the agreement guarantees the permanence of Urquidy on the major league roster, what can be confirmed thanks to official information is that the Mexican will be in spring training from the start, where he will seek to earn a place in the team’s starting rotation.

With this, his participation with the Venados de Mazatlan ends after six starts, with the seventh still pending, which was scheduled for this past Friday where Quijada had to cancel due to details related to negotiations with his new team.
