Jets’ Kris Boyd readmitted to hospital after shooting

Less than two weeks after being shot in midtown Manhattan, Kris Boyd, a cornerback for the New York Jets, has been readmitted to the hospital, according to public updates.

The 29-year-old player posted a message to supporters on his Instagram stories, writing, “I was released but had to return to the hospital due to my health issues,” before sharing his love and appreciation for fans and friends who have reached out in support.

On the night of Sunday, November 16, Boyd was shot in the abdomen outside a Manhattan restaurant and rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

According to law enforcement, the bullet lodged in his lung required multiple procedures to extract.

From shooting to hospital readmission

Days after his initial hospital admission, Boyd posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed and wrote the following caption on Instagram stories:

“I’m sorry, I have no words at the moment. Just grateful! I’m coming along, starting to breathe on my own now. Sincerely appreciate everyone!”

Aaron Glenn, head coach of the Jets, said Boyd was “upbeat,” and noted that his wife and newborn child were also doing well. Glenn added he believed Boyd “will walk away from this just fine.”

But Boyd’s readmission, announced November 27, has raised fresh concern. He thanked fans for their support, but acknowledged he hasn’t been able to respond to individual messages, a sign that healing remains uncertain.

What’s at stake for Boyd and the Jets

Boyd signed a one-year, $1.6 million deal with the Jets this past offseason and was expected to contribute primarily on special teams.

However, he never played this season: a shoulder injury during training camp landed him on season-ending injured reserve long before the shooting.

The shooting adds a new, unpredictable layer to what was already a lost season. Even if Boyd recovers physically, there are real questions about his readiness, and mental readiness, to return to professional football.

Recovery from a lung wound and the trauma of a violent incident may well affect not only his body but also his confidence and sense of safety.

Has the shooter been caught?

The night of the shooting reportedly involved a verbal altercation between Boyd and his teammates and another group, who allegedly made derogatory remarks about their clothing, prompting police to later say they were investigating whether the violence stemmed from a robbery attempt.

Authorities continue to investigate the shooting. Police have released surveillance images of a suspect and are appealing to the public for tips; no arrests have been announced as of yet.

On the medical side, neither Boyd nor the Jets has disclosed why he needed to go back to the hospital.

Still, there is reason for cautious optimism. His earlier update about breathing on his own and the coach’s remarks suggested progress before this relapse.

Teammates and fans rallied around him; the outpouring of support has been visible across social media.
