Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones remains unwavering in his belief that star cornerback Trevon Diggs can rise to the standard the franchise demands, even as the relationship endures moments of tension and scrutiny.
Diggs, once hailed as one of the league’s most dangerous ballhawks, has faced a series of challenges, from injuries to contractual consequences, that have reshaped the conversation surrounding his future in Dallas.
One of the most significant flashpoints came when Diggs failed to reach the required participation threshold in the team’s offseason program. His contract included a clause requiring him to be present for at least 84.375% of workouts, and when he fell short, the Cowboys enforced a $500,000 deduction from his base salary.
Jones did not mince words afterwards, noting that the team “expected availability” and that compensation was tied directly to showing up. For a franchise known for its emphasis on accountability, the decision reflected a larger philosophy: highly paid players are expected not only to perform, but to lead.
Diggs’ situation has been complicated by a difficult run of health issues. After tearing his ACL in 2023, he endured additional knee problems and later suffered a concussion stemming from a domestic accident. These setbacks have limited his on-field impact, leaving Dallas without one of its most dynamic defenders for long stretches.
Yet despite the frustration, Jones has repeatedly emphasized that he does not view Diggs as nearing the end of his Cowboys tenure. He has publicly stated that he sees “no reason” to believe the cornerback has played his final game in Dallas and has stressed patience as Diggs works through recovery.
“I think if Diggs plays at the level that he’s expected to play, yes. A big yes,” Jones said when asked if the Cowboys can improve their defence with Diggs on the field during his Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan.
“It’s just amazing what additional healthy talent can do for your execution and game plan. And frankly, the production of the players who are playing around that returning player. So, the answer is a big yes there.”
A vote of confidence amid mounting expectations
Jones’ messaging reveals a careful balance: he expects Diggs to meet the responsibilities that come with his contract, yet he’s also determined to support him through adversity.
He has described Diggs as someone who must “walk and lead,” especially given his stature and the investment the organization has made in him.
At the same time, Jones has dismissed concerns that Diggs’ current injuries jeopardize his long-term outlook, making clear that the team still envisions him as a central piece of its defensive future.
Ultimately, Diggs’ challenge is twofold – regaining his Pro Bowl form and demonstrating the leadership Dallas insists upon. If he can return healthy and consistently participate in team activities, the Cowboys believe he can still be the elite playmaker they signed him to be.
And for Jones, availability and presence are just as important as the interceptions that once defined Diggs’ rise.
