James Rodriguez’s fitness worries ahead of MLS move

Minnesota United is close to signing James Rodriguez, but the move speaks more of caution than ambition. According to Jeff Carlisle (ESPN), the Colombian would arrive on a short-term contract, without Designated Player status and only until the 2026 World Cup. Translated: it’s not a leap of faith, it’s a controlled trial.

In the current MLS, that is already a sign. Minnesota is not expecting to resurrect the James of Brazil 2014; it hopes to see if there is still something useful left before committing for real. A signing without risk… because there are many doubts.

From a financial point of view, the operation makes sense. Free transfer, limited salary and a clear time horizon. From a sporting point of view, the outlook is much more uncertain.

James is 34 years old, will turn 35 in July and has not played 20 league games in a single season since 2022-23 with Olympiacos. The reasons are repeated: muscle injuries, lack of continuity, rhythm problems and a motivation that seems to be activated only in very specific contexts.

MLS does not forgive the physical

Here’s the point that many underestimate. MLS is not a slow league or forgiving to creative veterans. It’s 34 games, coast-to-coast travel, artificial turf, extreme climates and constant physical demands.

James comes from playing 17 games with Club Leon in the 2025-26 season. It’s not a small amount, but it’s not a guarantee either. And even less so when thinking about a full campaign in the United States.

The question is not whether he can flash. That is out of the question.

The question is whether it can be sustained week after week.

Intact talent, intermittent impact

James remains a set-piece specialist and a footballer capable of deciding matches with a single technical gesture. The problem is that this rarely translates into consistency at club level. His career after 2015 is marked by short steps, premature departures and projects that do not quite fit. Bayern Munich, Everton, Olympiacos, Leon… Minnesota seems to be just another stop, not a final destination.

Keys to James’ arrival in MLS

  • James would arrive in Minnesota on a short-term contract until 2026
  • Would not occupy a Designated Player spot
  • He has not played 20 league games since 2022-23
  • He played 17 matches with Leon in 2025-26
  • He turns 35 in July
  • Recurrent history of muscle injuries

Minnesota doesn’t believe, it evaluates

This signing is not an act of illusion, it is a period of observation. Minnesota is not buying a star; it is buying time to see if James can still compete in a league that punishes lack of rhythm and continuity. If it works, it will be a story of redemption.

Otherwise, it will fit perfectly into the pattern of a career that, for the past decade, has lived more on memories than on the present.
