Jake Paul could lose WBA ranking after wave of criticism

Jake Paul’s career in professional boxing is once again at the center of debate after he was ranked 14th in the WBA cruiserweight rankings, a decision that angered active boxers and experts in the sport

The organization is now considering reversing that position, which could be another obstacle in the controversial trajectory of the YouTuber-turned-boxer.

After defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision, Jake Paul was included in the official WBA rankings as the number 14 cruiserweight. The decision, although surprising to many, was explained by the organization itself as a recognition of his performance in his most recent fight, held in Anaheim, California.

Jake Paul thanks Gilberto Mendoza for placing him 14th in the rankings

Paul, who now boasts a record of 10-1 with seven knockouts, publicly thanked the WBA president Gilberto Mendoza and did not hesitate to ask for new challenges:

Greetings to the WBA and Gilberto for being disruptive and not being afraid to recognize me. Seeing all these lists with the current champion, Badou Jack. Bring him to me!

Jake Paul’s ranking position criticized

It wasn’t long before other boxers spoke out. One of the most affected was American fighter Craig Parker, who lost his place in the rankings by dropping from 14th to 15th to make way for Paul.

It was a slap in the face… all the effort and sacrifice we make to be ranked, and he just walks in

Critics also point out that Chavez Jr. was not currently ranked as a cruiserweight and his last relevant victory was in 2012 at middleweight. For many, Paul has yet to beat a truly active and ranked opponent in the division.

What will the WBA do with Jake Paul’s ranking?

Under pressure, the WBA announced that it will review its decision during its European convention to be held July 15-18 in Madrid. According to The Ring magazine, the possibility of reversing the ranking is on the table.

In response to the controversy, MVP Promotions, Paul’s promoter, posted on social media: “We can’t say we’re surprised. But whatever happens, they won’t stop him. He falls 10 times and gets up every time. Get ready to hate what you can’t control”.

Who will be Jake Paul’s next opponent?

Despite the criticism, Jake Paul continues to aim high. After defeating Chavez Jr., he has mentioned the following as his next targets:

  • Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (current WBA and WBO champion)
  • Badou Jack (WBC champion)
  • Even Anthony Joshua and Gervonta Davis, although both compete in different categories
