Is it time for Canelo vs Benavidez now that the fight against Crawford is off?

The boxing world was shocked by the cancellation of the showdown between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Terence Crawford, but the show must go on and fans are taking the announcement as a good opportunity for Canelo to finally step into the ring against David Benavidez.

The Ring magazine was responsible for announcing the cancellation of the fight, which was scheduled for September 12 in Las Vegas and was shaping up to be the most prominent event on the 2025 boxing calendar, a date that could well be replaced by an agreement with ‘Red Flag’.

With the fight canceled, both boxers will have to plan their next steps. Canelo still has several options, he could seek a rematch against Dmitry Bivol or an elusive clash with Benavidez.

The table is set for the Canelo vs Benavidez fight

For boxing fans, the cancellation of the fight between Saul Alvarez and Terence Crawford is an opportunity for the long-awaited fight against David Benavidez, although it may not be so easy, because the so-called ‘Mexican Monster’ now has his sights set on challenging the winner of Dmitry Bivol vs Artur Beterbiev on February 22. Essentially Sports highlighted some reactions on social media:

“Exactly what had to happen! Give us Canelo vs. Benavidez! Enough of the nonsense, I’m tired of the nonsense! Make boxing great again!” posted one user on X, while another fed the hope that an agreement can be reached: “Please, finally, Benavidez. Eddy was at the fight with Morell; please be a sign.”

There were some who found Jake Paul guilty of the cancellation and others who just regretted that Canelo will not get into the ring against Crawford: “Damn, I was looking forward to it,” while one more put his imagination to work and solved the boxing agenda with a suggestion: “Now Crawford vs. Charlo/Fundora and Canelo vs. Benavidez.”
