How Lamar Hunt helped Marty Schottenheimer: Brian Schottenheimer shares a personal story

For Brian Schottenheimer, the Thanksgiving matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys is more than just a football game.

It also brings back memories of the kindness Lamar Hunt showed his father, legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, during a challenging period in his life.

“I’ve always had immense respect for the Hunt family. They treated us incredibly well while my dad was coaching there. I only spent one year with him, but the way they cared for him after he got sick really means a lot to me,” Brian Schottenheimer said.

Growing up in a football family, he witnessed firsthand the strong connection between his parents and Lamar and Norma Hunt. He even recalled the first time his father stepped onto the Kansas City sideline in 1988.

“I remember that stadium, his first game coaching there. There were maybe 21,000 fans back then,” Schottenheimer reflected.

He also noted the remarkable transformation of the Chiefs under his father’s leadership. “He completely changed the organization. Arrowhead eventually became the packed, tailgating-filled stadium it is today,” he said.

A legacy that goes beyond the field

For Brian Schottenheimer, the relationships built during those years carry as much weight as the wins.

“Seeing the success my dad had is special to look back on. The people in that organization treated us like family, which is how it should be,” he said.

The Chiefs‘ history is deeply intertwined with the Cowboys. Originally the Dallas Texans, the team eventually relocated to Kansas City, but the connections remained.

Marty Schottenheimer‘s tenure from 1989 to 1998 included seven playoff appearances and three division titles, creating enduring memories for Brian, who also gained experience working under his father at Arrowhead Stadium in 1998.

As Thanksgiving approaches, this matchup serves as more than a classic rivalry. For Brian Schottenheimer, it is a reminder of history, family, and the support Lamar Hunt gave to his father-a gesture that has stayed with him to this day.
