How Julián Álvarez rejected Barcelona and confirmed his desire to succeed at Atlético Madrid

Julián Álvarez was one of the standout performers in Atlético Madrid‘s thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first leg. Following the convincing victory, he was asked about the possibility of moving to FC Barcelona.

The Argentina international‘s response will surprise Barça fans, while leaving Atlético Madrid supporters delighted with a top player who continues to deliver for Diego Simeone’s team.

What did Julián Álvarez say about going to Barcelona?

This is how Julián Álvarez addressed the situation in the Champions League mixed zone, shutting down any chance of wearing the blaugrana jersey and reaffirming that he is happy at Atlético de Madrid.

“What do you want me to say? I’ve never said anything. These are things that get said, then they snowball on social media-one person says something and comments pile up-but I’ve never said anything. Obviously, I’m happy at Atlético de Madrid. Very happy. We’re fighting in the competitions; it’s true we’re farther back in LaLiga, but in the Champions League we’re doing well, and then there’s the Copa del Rey final,” he said in the mixed zone.

Regarding the rough patch he had been going through, the former Manchester City forward said he never stops working because all he wants is to help the team, something he believes he is now doing well.

“I’m doing great. I had a streak that wasn’t good; personally, I always want to help the team. I work my hardest on the pitch-that’s what I can control-give 100%. Then I might do better or worse, but the desire is always there. Hopefully the goals and assists keep coming; that’s what I want to help the team.”

Atlético Madrid will play the Champions League second leg in London, England, on March 18, where Tottenham Hotspur will try to overturn a painful 5-2 deficit.
