How a team scored one of the strangest goals ever in 19 seconds without touching the ball

Football has seen its share of strange moments over the years, but very few compare to what happened in this match.

Just seconds after kickoff, one team found itself leading 1-0 without a single touch on the ball.

The sequence lasted less than 20 seconds

From the opening whistle, the opposing team attempted to build from the back, calmly moving the ball between defenders. But under light pressure, everything suddenly went wrong. A defender tried to pass the ball back to his goalkeeper, who had moved too far away from the goal.

The pass rolled past the goalkeeper, who was completely out of position, and slowly crossed the goal line into an empty net. No opponent touched the ball. No shot was taken. And yet, the goal counted.

It was officially recorded as an own goal.

The moment took place in a Brazilian second-division match between Sport Recife and Novorizontino, where the mistake came just 18-19 seconds into the game.

The defender involved, Alisson Cassiano, and the goalkeeper, Caique França, could only look at each other in disbelief as the ball rolled in. What should have been a routine play turned into one of the most bizarre goals in recent football memory.

Has something like this happened before?

While goals without an opponent’s touch are extremely rare, they are not completely unheard of.

In football history, unusual scoring moments have taken different forms from long-distance own goals to controversial “ghost goals,” where referees award a goal even when it is unclear if the ball crossed the line.

Some fans have even gone a step further, suggesting that a moment this unusual feels almost too strange to be real. Because of how unlikely the sequence was, a few have speculated online about the possibility of betting influence. However, there is no evidence to support those claims, and it remains far more likely that it was simply a rare and costly mistake one of those moments that football occasionally produces and that are hard to explain when they happen.
