Happy news for Scottie Scheffler: American golfer withdraws from Houston Open as wife prepares to give birth

Scottie Scheffler has made a significant personal decision ahead of a crucial stretch in the golf calendar, withdrawing from this week’s Houston Open as he and his wife Meredith Scheffler prepare to welcome their second child. The world No. 1 officially pulled out of the PGA Tour tournament on Tuesday morning, just 48 hours before the opening round.

Instead of competing, Scheffler opted to remain close to home in Texas during the final stages of his wife’s pregnancy.

His place in the field has been taken by veteran Matt Kuchar, ensuring the event maintains a full lineup despite the late change.

For Scheffler, the decision underlines his continued commitment to family, even as he remains at the pinnacle of professional golf.

The couple previously welcomed their first child, son Bennett Scheffler, in May 2024, a moment that coincided with one of the most dominant stretches of Scheffler‘s career.

During that period, the golf world closely followed both his on-course performances and the anticipation surrounding the birth of his first child.

Bennett has since become a familiar presence at tournaments, often seen celebrating alongside his father after major victories.

How will it affect Scheffler’s Masters preparation

The timing of this latest withdrawal is notable given Scheffler‘s history at the Houston Open.

The Texas native has finished runner-up at the event three times, including each of the past two years, using it as a key warm-up before heading to Augusta National for the Masters.

Skipping the tournament introduces a degree of uncertainty as he prepares to compete for a third green jacket. With Rory McIlroy currently holding the title, Scheffler will be aiming to reclaim the crown at one of golf’s most prestigious venues.

However, arriving without his customary final tune-up could leave him slightly short of competitive rhythm.

Despite that potential drawback, Scheffler‘s recent form suggests he remains a formidable contender. He has already secured victory at The American Express this season and maintained an impressive level of consistency across events.

His streak of 18 consecutive top-10 finishes-dating back to the Houston Open the previous year-was only recently snapped with a tie for 12th at the Genesis Invitational.

His most recent outing resulted in a tie for 22nd at The Players Championship, a performance that, while below his usual standards, does little to diminish his standing as the game’s top-ranked player.

How did Scottie Scheffler and his wife Meredith meet?

Off the course, Scheffler and his wife Meredith‘s journey has been marked by enduring stability.

High school sweethearts, the couple navigated attending rival colleges – Scottie at the University of Texas and Meredith at Texas A&M University – before marrying in December 2020.

Since then, Meredith has been a constant presence throughout Scheffler‘s rise to the top of the sport. She is regularly seen accompanying him on the PGA Tour and sharing in milestones such as his victories at the PGA Championship and The Open.

As the couple prepares to expand their family once again, Scheffler‘s withdrawal from the Houston Open reflects a clear prioritization of life beyond golf.

Even with the green jacket on the line in the coming weeks, family can trump spot – especially when you are as successful as Scheffler.
