After a few hours had passed since the end of the Real Madrid vs Benfica match-where Vinícius Jr.’s stunning goal secured a crucial 0-1 away win for Real Madrid–Gianluca Prestianni finally broke his silence regarding the alleged racist insult against Vinícius Jr.

Gianluca Prestianni Responds to Racism Accusations

The 20-year-old Argentine footballer used his Instagram account to post a photograph of himself alongside Vinícius Jr., attempting to clarify the situation after becoming the target of heavy criticism for allegedly insulting the Brazilian star.

“I want to clarify that at no time did I direct racist insults to Vinícius Jr., who regrettably misunderstood what he thought he heard. I was never racist with anyone and I regret the threats I received from Real Madrid players,” he wrote on Instagram.

UEFA Anti-Racism Protocol Activated

After Vinícius Jr.’s goal in the 49th minute-followed by his signature celebration dance-the Brazilian forward reported to referee François Letexier that he had been subjected to a racist insult by Gianluca Prestianni. This prompted the activation of UEFA’s anti-racism protocol.

For approximately 10 minutes, the match was paused, with heated discussions unfolding, though play eventually resumed. Opinions remain divided, with several Benfica figures, including head coach José Mourinho, defending their player. All eyes are now on UEFA to see whether any sanction will be imposed.
