Gervonta Davis loses his fear-inducing aura as boxing great makes bold claim: “Tank throws the least…”

Ever since he made the move up to lightweight in 2019, Gervonta Davis has been the biggest fish to fry in the division. Despite his incredible crowd-drawing power and show-stopping abilities, Davis has only been able to capture the WBA title in the division – along with the WBA (regular) super lightweight title against Mario Barrios in 2021. The reason for not having more belts? He hasn’t been able to get other high-profile lightweights to fight him.

Only a bout against Ryan Garcia was truly a mega fight, and yet that one ended up not being for any belt at all. “Tank” still KO’d arguably his toughest competition, and he continued that trend until he ran into Lamont Roach Jr. earlier this year. Davis and Roach drew, with the latter giving Tank the hardest fight of his career. Since then, Davis has gotten into legal trouble and his future in the sport is becoming murky. Especially since there may be a new king in the lightweight division, at least in Timothy Bradley‘s eyes.

Timothy Bradley says Gervonta “Tank” Davis throws least amount of punches among 135 pound elites

Bradley has come out and wondered if Davis even wants to be in boxing anymore. Given a somewhat lukewarm attitude towards the sport in recent times, Bradley is backing Shakur Stevenson heavily in a potential fight between the two.

I think Gervonta Davis is looking for a big payday and he is going to sail off. So if that Gervonta Davis get into the ring with Shakur, I got Shakur all day. All day, seven days a week… you got one of the best defensive fighters if not the best defensive fighter in the game, you got one of the most accurate fighters, power punchers in the game as well. But you have one who throws less. Out of any of these guys at 135 [Davis] throws the least amount of punches.

Bradley cautions that Davis only needs one big punch to floor Stevenson in a hypothetical fight. That has always been Tank’s calling card. His power has bailed him out of some tricky situations, but that’s what makes him so great. When he couldn’t land that shot, though, it ended up looking like it did against Roach.

Given how gifted Stevenson is defensively, it could prove to be the hardest bout of Davis’ career. The question is whether he even wants to take that risk.
