George Pickens faces NFL’s biggest fine of the week for touchdown celebration

The NFL handed down one of its heftiest fines of the week, and it wasn’t for a dangerous tackle or a helmet-to-helmet hit. Instead, the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens was fined $26,085 for an unusual offense: celebrating a touchdown by leaping onto and hugging the goalpost.

Pickens celebrated euphorically in the 33-16 win over the Las Vegas Raiders.

But the league officially listed the violation as “Unsportsmanlike Conduct – Use of Prop.” Yes, the “prop” in question was the goalpost itself.

While Pickens‘ celebration posed no real threat to opponents’ health, the NFL still considered it a violation serious enough to warrant a six-figure fine.

Interestingly, other players received smaller fines this week for far more aggressive actions, including roughing the passer, hits on defenseless receivers, and other illegal contact that could result in injuries.

Yet none of those penalties reached the amount Pickens was fined for a simple touchdown celebration.

Another NFL star lands in hot water

Pickens wasn’t alone in drawing the league’s attention. Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams was also fined for a similar goalpost celebration, receiving $14,491.

The difference in fines comes down to repeat offenses. Pickens‘ infraction on Monday night marked his fifth unsportsmanlike conduct violation this season.

His previous fines included multiple taunting penalties, a fine for removing his helmet, and another for a violent gesture.

Williams, on the other hand, has only committed two such violations this season, which resulted in the smaller fine.

The NFL typically increases fines for repeat offenses, and George Pickens‘ history clearly contributed to the league’s decision.

Why goalpost hugs are such a big no-no

The NFL strictly prohibits players from using any “object … including pylons, goal posts, or crossbars” as part of a celebration.

The rationale behind the rule is twofold: safety and equipment preservation. Jumping onto a goalpost could potentially damage the stadium’s infrastructure or cause injuries to the player attempting the stunt.

Historically, celebrations like these have led to equipment problems. Notably, tight end Jimmy Graham‘s 2013 goalpost dunk bent the uprights, causing game delays.

Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez faced penalties for similar actions during his career.

When players violate this rule, referees typically impose a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the spot.

Beyond the immediate penalty, the league can issue fines, particularly if the player has a record of repeat offenses. Pickens‘ fine has reignited debate over the NFL‘s strict celebration rules.

Supporters argue that the regulations are necessary to maintain safety and order, while critics say they stifle spontaneous and fun moments that add excitement to the game.

Regardless, the message is clear: hugging the goalpost is off-limits – and repeat offenses will be costly.
