Eugenio Suarez makes history: The full list of MLB players who have hit 4 home runs in one game

Eugenio Suárez delivered a performance for the ages on Saturday night, becoming the 19th player in Major League Baseball history to hit four home runs in a single game. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ third baseman achieved the feat in front of 43,043 fans at Chase Field, tying the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth inning before his team ultimately fell to the Atlanta Braves, 8-7, in 10 innings.

Suárez’s historic night began with a 418-foot solo shot to left field in the second inning. He followed it up with a two-run blast in the fourth, measuring 411 feet to left-center field, extending Arizona’s lead to 5-2. In the sixth inning, Suárez crushed a 443-foot bomb to center field, pushing the lead to 6-2.

With the Diamondbacks trailing 7-6 in the ninth inning, Suárez stepped up against Raisel Iglesias, one of baseball’s premier relievers. After working the count full, Suárez smashed a game-tying home run into the left-field bleachers, his fourth of the night, completing a rare and remarkable accomplishment.

The crowd erupted as Suárez rounded the bases, but despite his heroics, the Diamondbacks were unable to capitalize in extra innings. Arizona’s loss marked only the third time in MLB history that a team has lost a game in which one of its players hit four homers. The last occurrence was in 1986 when Bob Horner of the Braves achieved the feat, while the first came in 1896 with Ed Delahanty of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Reaction from a historic night

Suárez, who retrieved the ball from his fourth homer in exchange for a signed jersey, hat, and ball, was humbled by the accomplishment. “I never thought in my life that I’d be able to do that, hit four home runs in a game,” he said. “It’s very special for me to be able to do that here in Arizona and do it for my team, do it for my family.” His performance also propelled him to a Major League-leading 10 home runs this season.

This wasn’t Suárez’s first experience with four-homer games. In 2017, while playing for the Cincinnati Reds, he witnessed teammate Scooter Gennett hit four home runs in a game. Suárez said the memory crossed his mind during his historic night, calling it a “dream come true.” His achievement also places him alongside J.D. Martinez as the only two players in Diamondbacks history to hit four homers in a game.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who also managed Martinez during his four-homer game in 2017, made history as the only manager to oversee two such performances. Despite the team’s loss, Lovullo emphasized the importance of celebrating the moment. “You’ve got to really embrace this moment that you’re watching something special,” he said. For Suárez and the Diamondbacks, Saturday night was both a celebration of individual brilliance and a reminder of the unpredictable nature of baseball.
