Terence Crawford’s name remains synonymous with total dominance. Following his historic victory over Canelo Alvarez, the American cemented himself as the best pound-for-pound boxer on the planet. However, there are those who believe that his reign could be coming to an end. And that someone is Eddie Hearn, the renowned British promoter of Matchroom Boxing, who claims that Jaron “Boots” Ennis has what it takes to dethrone “Bud”.
In an interview with TMZ Sports, Hearn was convinced that the undefeated Philadelphia pugilist, with a record of 34-0 (30 KOs), will be “the number one pound-for-pound in the sport for the next four, five or six years”. The 28-year-old will move up to 154 pounds for the first time to face Uisma Lima, a fight that will mark a new chapter in his meteoric rise.
“If anyone can beat him, it’s Boots”
“Obviously, my job is to defend my boxers, but I think with Boots we have the ideal man to beat Crawford,” Hearn said. “He’s 10 years younger than Crawford, he’s already unified the 147 pounds and now he’s going up to 154 to look for a new title. He has the ability to move even up to 168 pounds. He’s an exceptional talent.”
The promoter also outlined his team’s next targets: “We want Virgil Ortiz, Sebastian Fundora, Bakhram Murtazaliev… anyone at 154 pounds.” But his sights are set on an eventual superfight between Crawford and Ennis which, in his words, “could be one of the best of all time”.
The challenge: to attract Crawford to the ring
Hearn acknowledges that the biggest obstacle will be financial. “We know we need to make Ennis such an attractive fighter that Crawford accepts the fight,” he explained. Even so, he is fully confident in the media impact that this duel could have.
“If you want a real challenge, get ready because Boots is coming,” he said.
