David Beckham responds with blunt five-word message after Bruno Fernandes broke his record

The history of Manchester United was rewritten last Sunday at Old Trafford. In a stellar performance that secured the Red Devils’ 3-1 victory over Aston Villa, Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes not only consolidated his team in third place in the table, but also dethroned one of the club’s greatest legends: David Beckham.

The Portuguese midfielder reached a new record that confirms how important he is for the team and that despite United’s bad years, he has managed to remain consistent and his numbers support him.

Bruno Fernandes’ assist record

Fernandes was the driving force for the team, registering two key assists. The first came when he set up Casemiro, and the second when he served a precise ball to Matheus Cunha that restored United’s lead. With these two interventions, the Portuguese reached the figure of 16 assists in the current Premier League campaign.

This officially surpasses David Beckham’s historic record, who held the mark of 15 assists from the legendary 1999/2000 season.

David Beckham congratulates Bruno Fernandes after breaking his record

After the feat, Manchester United published an interview on its social networks where Fernandes was visibly moved to be compared to Beckham. The Portuguese did not hold back in his praise for the former England captain:

“To be up there with that name, who is one of the players that everyone admired in terms of crosses and passes. Everyone in their own garden has always tried to do it like Beckham… I’m very happy to achieve that,” said Fernandes.

Beckham’s response was not long in coming. Through Instagram, the United legend showed his class and lack of ego by dedicating a direct message of just five words that has already gone viral:

“Congratulations to a special player”.
