David Beckham reacts as Trent Alexander-Arnold is left out of England squad

It felt like one of those squad announcements that lands a little heavier than usual. Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in England’s list for the March 2026 friendlies, and that single decision has quickly become the talking point around England right now.

The timing matters. England drew 1-1 against Uruguay (March 27) and now prepare to face Japan on March 31. These matches are not just about results, they are about shaping a squad that will eventually carry into the 2026 World Cup. And right now, Trent is not part of that immediate picture.

Thomas Tuchel did not dodge the conversation. He called it a “sporting decision,” admitting it could feel tough or even unfair. But he also made his reasoning clear. Players like Ben White and Tino Livramento have delivered in recent camps, and that consistency is being rewarded.

Since his move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2025, things have not quite clicked for Alexander-Arnold. Injuries have interrupted his season, limiting him to 21 appearances and just three assists. He has also missed 22 matches, which inevitably affects rhythm and trust at both club and international level.

That is a noticeable change from his Liverpool years, where he was constantly involved, dictating games and producing numbers. Now, availability has become part of the conversation, not just talent.

Beckham steps in with a different view

David Beckham offered a more sympathetic take when speaking to talkSPORT. He did not ignore the criticism Trent often receives, especially defensively, but he framed it differently.

“I’m a massive fan of Trent… sometimes you have to accept what a player brings going forward,” Beckham said, referencing Roberto Carlos as a reminder that full-backs do not all fit the same mold.

He also pointed to something subtle but important. Tuchel said other players are ahead “at the moment.” That wording matters. It suggests this is not a closed door, just a current snapshot.

A deeper squad, tougher choices

Reports from Sky Sports indicate Tuchel spoke directly with Alexander-Arnold to explain the situation. That kind of communication shows clarity, but it also reflects a shift. England now have real depth in that position, and each option offers something slightly different.

Around the game, the reaction has been steady rather than explosive. Analysts see this less as a snub and more as a sign that competition inside the squad has genuinely increased. Not long ago, Trent felt automatic. That is no longer the case.

Where things go from here

England will keep testing combinations over the next few months as the path toward the 2026 World Cup becomes clearer. For Alexander-Arnold, the focus is simpler, even if it is not easy. Stay fit, play regularly, and make an impact again at Real Madrid.

There is still time. But the margin for error is thinner now than it has been in years.
