Dave Roberts has no hesitation when choosing between Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge: “He’s the greatest of all time”

They say that comparisons are odious and idle, but they are part of sport. This is especially true when they take place during rest periods and without games in between. This is the case in MLB during this season with characters such as Dave Roberts, who had to choose between Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani.

If the Dodgers manager was pushed into that choice, it’s because there is also a large section of fans who have focused a final debate on discussing who is better between Judge and Ohtani.

To take advantage of the occasion, MLB Network asked Roberts which of the two players was his favorite. With no way out to give an answer, the manager did not hesitate to lean towards the Japanese player.

I really feel like he’s the greatest player of all time to put on a baseball uniform, and I don’t need to see another five years to validate what my eyes are seeing…

Dave Roberts

Roberts was blunt in his words after seeing what Ohtani did in 2025. The league’s only true two-way star accomplished things that hardly seem human. For example, in Game 3 of the World Series, he became the first player in postseason history to go 4-4 with two home runs and two doubles.

In addition, he joined an absurdly select group by winning back-to-back MVPs in the same seasons in which he also won a championship, something only Joe Morgan had done before in baseball.

But what makes Ohtani so unreal is not just that he hits and pitches, but how dominant he is in both facets. This postseason, he hit more balls over 100 mph than any other MLB player. And he threw more 100 mph pitches than all but Hunter Greene and Tarik Skubal.

What’s going on with Aaron Judge?

He is criticized for his lack of World Series rings, but his individual numbers are those of a true star. He recently hit his 190th home run in just 500 games, something only three players have achieved in history: McGwire, Sosa and Barry Bonds.

And when you compare the pure hitting numbers, Judge actually comes out ahead in categories like batting average and slugging. Ohtani is a different kind of monster because you also have to take his pitching into account, but strictly as a hitter, Judge still reigns.
