Cowboys trade up for Ohio State’s Caleb Downs in Draft-Day steal

The Dallas Cowboys left nothing to chance. With their first pick in the NFL Draft 2026, “America’s Team” made a precise move to secure Ohio State safety Caleb Downs, pulling off a trade that shook up the top of the board.

A strategic move

While there were rumors of Dallas making an aggressive jump from No. 12, they ultimately chose precision over volume. The deal with the Miami Dolphins was simple but telling: the Cowboys sent the No. 12 pick and two fifth-round selections to move up just one spot to No. 11.

A one-spot trade like this is a classic sign of a bidding war behind the scenes. Dallas knew Downs wouldn’t be there at No. 12 and paid the necessary “tax” to block a rival from jumping ahead.

Why Caleb Downs is a draft steal

For many analysts, Downs is the best defensive player in this class, regardless of position. His slide outside the top 10 was purely about positional value-something Jerry Jones refused to ignore.

Elite IQ: With natural ball instincts, Downs brings the vocal leadership Dallas’ secondary has been missing.

Total versatility: He’s more than just a safety-capable of covering the slot like a cornerback, playing in the box against the run, and ranging as a deep safety.

Immediate impact: On a team still sorting out its rotation between P.J. Locke, Jalen Thompson, and Malik Hooker, Downs arrives as a Day 1 starter.

The only reason he fell this far was positional value. Safeties simply aren’t prioritized like other positions, which led several top-10 teams to pass on him.

But what others passed on, the Cowboys capitalized on.

No matter where he lines up, Downs brings elite talent-and Dallas is off to a strong start in this year’s draft.
