Could George Pickens land Mike Tomlin the Steelers axe despite being traded to Cowboys in May?

Speculation around Mike Tomlin‘s future intensified at Pittsburgh as George Pickens continues to break out for the team, months after being traded from the Steelers.

After Dallas transformed its offense with the wide receiver since arriving in May, questions have been raised about whether the Steelers miscalculated his long-term value – with some pointing to Tomlin as the reason.

The 24-year-old has immediately altered Dallas’s attack, giving Dak Prescott a dynamic option capable of decisive gains alongside CeeDee Lamb as the Cowboys now rank second in the NFL for passing yards – with tight end Jake Ferguson also exploding.

Pickens’ presence has turned stalled drives into scoring threats and fueled discussion about whether losing him accelerated Pittsburgh’s growing instability as his 146-yard performance against Philadelphia Eagles caught the eye.

He dismantled coverages set up by the Super Bowl champions that were praised earlier in the season, helping Dallas race into in 21-0 lead in a win that kept NFL Playoffs ambitions alive despite uneven early results.

Analysts stressed that the Cowboys are not Super Bowl contenders but suggested Pickens positions them for a strong 2026 push.

Meanwhile the Steelers have lost control of the AFC North to the Baltimore Ravens, despite holding a four-game advantage over Lamar Jackson‘s team as recently as Week 6 on October 12.

Each productive week appears to complicate Tomlin’s standing, with critics arguing that roster handling has led to a collapse that might not have happened if Pickens remained, paired with D.K. Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers.

Reports indicated Tomlin and Pickens struggled to coexist, yet critics argue the coach needed to adapt for a player with unique production potential. The absence of postseason victories for nearly a decade has intensified pressure on organizational decision-making.

The trade details amplified frustration, since Dallas surrendered only a 2026 third-round pick plus a minor 2027 swap so with limited compensation gained, Pittsburgh could face years of comparison if Pickens anchors a sustained Cowboys resurgence.

George Pickens set to earn franchise tag from Jerry Jones and Cowboys

When Dallas acquired Pickens in the spring, the best outcome involved him forcing a contractual dilemma, signaling that elite production warranted long-term retention as he will be a free agent in 2026.

Now 11 games into the season, that scenario has unfolded exactly as the team anticipated thanks to a standout primetime outing against the Philadelphia Eagles, which elevated his profile further, as he compiled 146 yards on nine receptions for a touchdown.

Dallas sits at 5-5-1 and multiple sources confirmed the franchise aims to keep Pickens beyond 2026 as he continues to make a strong impression at the AT&T Stadium, as Prescott described securing him as essential.

Pickens enters the final season of his rookie agreement, and his output demands top-tier compensation. With 908 receiving yards, he trails only one NFL leader and has produced the most Dallas yardage since Amari Cooper‘s 2020 contribution.

Next Gen Stats reported that Pickens leads the league in tight-window receptions, totaling 12 for 227 yards. With Ja’Marr Chase and CeeDee Lamb elevating the market recently, negotiations project to approach the highest financial tier for receivers.
