Cody Bellinger can force the Yankees to look somewhere else

There are many fans eagerly awaiting the New York Yankees to make their first major move this offseason, something that hasn’t happened yet. And although they have a clear target in one of the top MLB free agents available, it seems things aren’t going very well for the organization.

According to various reports, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has made several offers to outfielder Cody Bellinger. It’s no secret that the team wants to re-sign the two-time All-Star, though negotiations have yet to produce a deal.

Time is running out, and the reality is that in New York, the Yankees can’t afford to wait much longer. As a result, the front office is already evaluating alternative roster options that could strengthen the team for the upcoming season.

Other Options for the New York Yankees (If Bellinger Isn’t the One)

It was Brendan Kuty of The Athletic who outlined several backup options for the Yankees. One name to watch is Austin Hays, who remains a free agent and could platoon with Jasson Domínguez. Hays posted a .319 average and a .949 OPS against left-handed pitching last season, underlining his value as a platoon bat.

One complication is competition from the New York Mets, who are also reportedly interested in Hays after roster changes that included moving on from key pieces.

Hays, 30, was a 2023 All-Star with experience across all three outfield positions. He joined the Cincinnati Reds before the 2025 season on a one-year, $5 million deal and delivered a .266 average, 15 home runs, and 64 RBIs. Injuries, however, limited him to 103 games, and Cincinnati declined his $12 million option, making him a free agent again.

Another veteran option is Tommy Pham, who owns a strong .802 career OPS against lefties. The 37-year-old spent last season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, batting .245 with 10 homers and 52 RBIs, making him a potential short-term solution.

There has also been speculation that the Cleveland Guardians could explore trading Steven Kwan, while the St. Louis Cardinals might make Brendan Donovan available – both intriguing trade targets for a Yankees team seeking balance and depth.

All of these are viable paths for the Yankees as they look to reinforce their roster. Still, the franchise remains focused on making Cody Bellinger their priority signing. Whether that pursuit succeeds – or forces New York to pivot – will shape the rest of their offseason strategy.
