Chris Jones sends heartfelt message to two-time Super Bowl champion the Chiefs refused to sign

The 2025 season hasn’t gone as the Kansas City Chiefs hoped, largely due to an inconsistent defense. Amid the crisis, Chris Jones asked the team to bring back Khalen Saunders, but when management refused, Jones had no choice but to wish his former teammate good luck.

Saunders was a key part of the Chiefs’ defense that won Super Bowls LIV and LVII. However, the team released him at the end of the 2022 season, and Saunders immediately signed with the New Orleans Saints.

After two successful seasons with the Saints, the team traded him to the Jaguars. Saunders didn’t perform as expected in Jacksonville, and the front office released him, opening the door for a return to the Chiefs and a reunion with Jones.

The star defensive tackle didn’t want to miss the opportunity and asked the front office to bring Saunders back. However, his request was denied, and Saunders ended up signing with the New York Jets.

Jones wished Saunders good luck with his new team

This Friday, Saunders announced his new contract with great fanfare on X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Grateful. Let’s get to work #JetUp.” Resigned, Jones responded today with three simple words: “My brotha brotha.”

Days earlier, Saunders hinted at his disappointment at not having secured a deal with the Chiefs. “Sorry y’all, I tried,” the player wrote. “If only the fans were the front office. Maybe one day, though. Who knows?”

Although the seven-year veteran didn’t mention the Chiefs by name, the message is quite clear. As Saunders begins his new chapter in New York, Kansas City will have to find a way to salvage their season.

The Chiefs needed to bolster their defense

After a rough first half of the season, the Chiefs are third in the AFC West with a 5-5 record. Patrick Mahomes’ offense has rebounded from last year’s struggles, but the defense seems to be going in the opposite direction.

Steve Spagnuolo’s unit ranks only 14th in the NFL. Their pass defense, in particular, has been disappointing, allowing 205.8 yards per game and recording just 22 sacks.

Saunders seemed like a perfect fit for a defensive line comprised mostly of veterans passing their prime. Now, Spagnuolo will have to make do with what he has and hope it’s enough.
