UEFA closes a 50th Ordinary Congress that was more than eventful. With the agreement between UEFA and Real Madrid that ends the Super League, among the federations the idea is gaining more and more weight. And it is none other than the continuity of Aleksander Ceferin. The newspaper L’Equipe reported it and MARCA has been able to confirm from within the organization from sources very close to the president that it is something that is being seriously considered. However, no one wants to take it for granted and they believe that the Slovenian will decide at the very last minute, and that is November 4, 2026, so there is time. The elections will be held on March 4, 2027.
Other UEFA sources also believe that there are no candidates on the horizon. Ceferin’s future has been controversial since the statutes were renewed, despite the fact that in 2017 the presidency itself approved a reform that limited the term of office to a maximum of three four-year terms (or a total of 12 years) to increase transparency.
However, in February 2024, UEFA approved at the Congress in Paris a modification of the statutes that invalidated this reform for positions before July 1, 2017, which would allow Ceferin to run for a fourth term in 2027, until 2031.
However, many thought Ceferin’s term was already over, as he himself said at the Congress in Paris two years ago, in February 2024, that he would not stand for re-election.
The change in the statutes caused an internal schism with some members of the Executive Committee such as David Gill and Zvonimir Boban, who left his position as director of football.
Ceferin has already sounded out those closest to him about this possibility to see their response. It is true that support from different federations has been forthcoming in recent months, but this possible re-election has been sounded out before the return of Real Madrid and Barcelona to the UEFA family. While the return of Los Blancos is awaiting all the details to be finalised, a possible continuity of Ceferin would test the foundations of this new peace sealed in Brussels.
