Canelo and the challenge of fighting at six in the morning and for the first time away from home

There are many who want to take his place, but today Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (62-2-2; 39 KOs) is still the face of boxing. The Mexican faces William Scull (23-0; 9 KOs) in the early hours of Saturday morning (DAZN) in a fight in which he can once again become the undisputed super middleweight champion. The Cuban holds the IBF title, although his career is a far cry from that of his rival.

Canelo is focused on the fight against Scull, but if he wins, a historic fight against Crawford is expected in Las Vegas in September. However, this week Saul faces the challenge of fighting in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) at six o’clock in the morning. “That’s why I came three weeks before the first fight. The first day I felt very tired. I train at four in the morning, I’m professional and I know how to work. I train my body for that,” said Canelo. “They say that in 20 days, the body adapts to anything, so I’m ready.” This strange schedule is because the fight must be broadcast at its usual time in North America.

Alvarez is the clear favorite for what will be his debut fight in Saudi Arabia, the third country in which he has fought in his career, as he has only fought in Mexico and the United States. “This is something new, but for me it is a dream come true,” he says. In fact, this could be the first of a mini-world tour, he told The Ring: “I would love to,” he says. He does not rule out a fight against Eubank Jr in England: “I have always dreamed of fighting in London and also in Japan, at the Tokyo Dome. But I think London is a closer possibility right now.” Canelo vs. Eubank at Wembley? A sell-out would be assured.

Canelo has a four-fight deal with Turki Alalshikh and will soon become involved in Saudi Arabia’s TKO Boxing promotions with Dana White. Presumably, it will all kick off for the Canelo-Crawford fight. “I’m excited to work with them. I like Dana White and I like Nick Khan [president of WWE] and TKO. For me, it’s something new. I’m very excited. I don’t know how White can make boxing better. He’s very focused on working and being very good at what he does in the UFC, I think we’re going to have a good time with him,” the Mexican told The Ring. First up is Scull, but at 34 years of age, a very interesting period opens up in Canelo’s career.
