Cavs hold out Donovan Mitchell after scary eye issue affects vision

The game moved fast, but one familiar presence was missing.

Donovan Mitchell did not suit up as the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Chicago Bulls 115-110 on Thursday, sidelined by a bruised left eye that has quietly become a real concern.

The injury traces back to a routine moment that turned awkward. During practice earlier in the week, Mitchell collided with Evan Mobley.

What seemed minor at first quickly became more complicated. His left eye turned bloodshot, and his vision was affected almost immediately.

He still tried to push through it. Against the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday, Mitchell stayed on the floor, but something was clearly off. He finished with 19 points on 4-of-14 shooting, numbers that do not match his usual rhythm.

Afterward, he explained it simply: “I could not really see out of my left eye.”

Before Thursday’s game, head coach Kenny Atkinson offered more clarity. “He was having issues last game, like blurry vision,” he said, noting that it is not structural damage or anything dangerous. Still, the decision was straightforward. The team chose recovery over risk.

Cleveland adjusts without its offensive engine

Mitchell’s absence is not easy to absorb. He has been the steady force behind Cleveland’s offense all season, averaging 28.0 points, 5.9 assists, and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 48% across 61 games.

That level of production shapes everything. Late possessions, scoring runs, even the pace of the game often run through him. Without Mitchell, the Cavaliers had to share the load more evenly against Chicago. They got the win, but it looked different.

Around the league, situations like this are handled carefully. Vision is too important to rush. Even slight blurriness can throw off timing and accuracy, especially for a player who relies so heavily on shot creation.

A growing list of absences

Mitchell was not alone on the injury report. Jarrett Allen missed his seventh straight game with right knee tendinitis and has already been ruled out for the upcoming matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans.

That matters more right now. The Cavaliers are navigating a competitive Eastern Conference where small stretches can shift positioning. Depth helps, but the margin for error gets thinner without key players available.

For now, the expectation is that Mitchell’s condition improves as the irritation settles. There is no exact timeline, but the tone from the team suggests this is short term.

Cleveland is taking a measured approach, balancing wins with patience. Because when the games start to carry more weight, having Donovan Mitchell at full strength changes everything.

This article is based on official comments from Donovan Mitchell and Kenny Atkinson, verified game data, and reporting consistent with ESPN and standard NBA injury coverage.
