Canelo Alvarez reiterates his desire for a rematch against Dmitry Bivol: “It’s not necessary, but I want it”

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez regained undisputed champion status in the super middleweight division and is at the beginning of the end of his career, as he has spoken on several occasions about when and how he will say goodbye to his brilliant career. However, he still has one thing left to overcome: a rematch against Russian champion Dmitry Bivol, the current undisputed light heavyweight champion.

And although in several attempts to arrange this fight the teams of both fighters have approached, they have not even come close to an attractive agreement for both. However, deep down, the Mexican champion wants to get rid of that thorn in his career. In an interview with the Mexican press, Canelo admitted that, although it is not a situation that keeps him awake at night, it is one of the issues he wants to resolve before hanging up his gloves.

On the one hand, Canelo said that the fight “is not necessary” for him or for anyone else, but that “personally” he wants it, to close one of the most painful chapters in his career, which dates back to May 2022, when the Mexican challenged the Russian for his WBA light heavyweight title.

The reasons that have prevented the rematch between Canelo and Bivol

As he has gone on to reap success, Canelo Alvarez knows that he occupies a place among the best Mexican fighters of all time, as a world champion in different categories, considered the best pound-for-pound at various times in his career and the first Mexican to achieve an undisputed title, something he has achieved twice at 168 pounds.

However, the defeat against. Bivol took him by surprise, as he was not considered a real threat in his career. However, the Russian used this victory to catapult his career to the point that he is now the undisputed champion of his category, the 175 pounds

It is not necessary, but I do want it. It’s different, because I already lived it, it already happened, but if it happens, go ahead

Canelo Álvarez

However, he warned that for the fight to take place, he has to agree to the conditions, so it will not be a fight at all costs, so the negotiation will not be easy, as the weight difference between the two is considerable.

On the first occasion, the Mexican moved up in weight to challenge Bivol and although the weight was not a factor, the size and reach of the Russian was, which put him in trouble on several occasions during the fight.

So during some of the talks between the two teams, Bivol hinted that he would have no problem dropping to 168 pounds to now be the challenger against Canelo: “If he wants to go down to 168, go ahead, if not, that’s fine too”.
